All lumber calculators & tools

Every estimation tool on this site, in one organized directory โ€” all free, all running in your browser, all storing nothing on our servers. The flagship lumber calculator carries the whole toolchain on one page; the sections below organize its features into the three jobs they do โ€” estimating, purchasing, and getting the result where it needs to go.

The lumber calculator

One page, one engine, four calculation modes. Pick your task โ€” board-foot material lists, framing stud counts, trim piece tallies, or siding coverage โ€” and the calculator applies industry-standard formulas, rounds up to whole boards, and totals the cost with built-in species pricing. No account, no upload, no waiting: the result updates live as you type.

It is deliberately opinionated about rounding. Lumber is sold in whole boards, so the purchase panel never gives you a fractional recommendation. Assumptions โ€” nominal vs actual, waste factor, stock length โ€” are printed next to the numbers they affect, so every estimate is auditable at a glance. Every calculation is also encoded into the page URL, so the link you text to a partner reopens with your exact inputs loaded.

You get, per run

  • โ†’Board feet & lineal feet totals
  • โ†’Whole boards to order (no decimals)
  • โ†’Cubic feet physical volume
  • โ†’Framing stud & plate counts
  • โ†’Coverage lineal feet for siding
  • โ†’Species-aware cost total
  • โ†’Nominal / actual dimension toggle
  • โ†’Save / share / print results

๐ŸงฎEstimating tools

Turn what you know โ€” board size, wall length, siding area, wood species โ€” into defensible board-foot volumes, stud counts, or lineal feet.

Every wrong lumber purchase starts as an estimating error, so this is the layer the site invests in most. The flagship calculator accepts four distinct modes: Board Feet for material lists using the T ร— W ร— L รท 12 formula; Framing for wall stud and plate counts from wall lengths and opening sizes; Board/Trim for converting linear runs into whole stock pieces; and Coverage for turning square-foot siding or deck area into lineal feet using exposed face width.

The most critical choice on every estimate is nominal versus actual dimensions, and the calculator handles it natively. Softwood framing lumber is priced by nominal size under PS 20-25 (2ร—4 = 2โ€ณ ร— 4โ€ณ for board-foot tallies even though the physical board is 1.5โ€ณ ร— 3.5โ€ณ). Hardwood is almost always quoted by actual dressed dimensions. A single toggle switches the basis for all calculations in one mode.

The final estimating input is wood species, which does two things: references a board-foot price so you get a cost total alongside every volume, and signals which standard applies. SPF, Douglas Fir, Cedar, Oak, Maple, Cherry, and Black Walnut all have reference prices you can override with your local lumber yard quote. This single input prevents the most common pricing mistake: applying a softwood BF price to a hardwood tally.

๐Ÿ“

Board feet mode

Pick a preset size (2ร—4, 2ร—6, etc.) or type custom thickness and width, choose nominal or actual dimensions, enter quantity and length โ€” BF = (T ร— W ร— L) รท 12, calculated for every board and totaled.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Framing mode

Enter wall length in feet, choose OC spacing (default 16โ€ณ), specify door and window openings โ€” get common studs, king and jack studs per opening, and plate counts automatically.

โœจ

Board / trim mode

Enter total linear run and stock board length โ€” pieces = ceil(run รท stock length) with waste for miter corners. Reports lineal feet, whole boards to order, and board-foot volume.

๐Ÿ

Coverage mode

Enter wall area in square feet and exposed face width of your siding or decking โ€” lineal feet = (area ร— 12) รท exposed width. Handles bevel, lap, board-and-batten and more.

๐Ÿ›’Purchase & budgeting tools

Convert a decimal you cannot buy into whole boards, waste allowance, spare boards, and a total you can plan around.

A result like 53.33 board feet is where other estimators stop โ€” and where the lumber yard starts. This layer rounds the computed volume up into whole boards of your chosen stock length, applies waste as additional boards (not a percentage tacked onto a decimal), and shows the spare volume left over explicitly. That leftover board is your insurance for mistakes and grain matching, not a rounding error.

Species presets auto-fill board-foot prices, but every field is editable. Enter your local yard's quote for 2ร—4 SPF, click calculate, and the cost panel updates in real time. You can price by board foot, by piece, or by linear foot depending on how your supplier quotes. The calculator also totals the board-foot value of any waste boards so you see the real cost of that 20% hardwood waste factor.

Stock length selection is another planning decision the calculator respects. Common framing lengths are 8, 10, 12 and 16 feet. Choose the length that matches what your lumber yard stocks, and the purchase panel shows exactly how many boards of that length to buy โ€” no decimal amounts, no awkward leftover lengths you have to cut down.

๐Ÿชต

Whole-board rounding

Every volume and count rounds up to whole boards โ€” you cannot buy a partial board from a lumber yard, so the calculator never gives you a fractional purchase recommendation.

โ™ป๏ธ

Waste factor tiers

10% standard framing, 15% diagonal decking, 20% hardwood grain matching โ€” waste is applied as additional whole boards, not just a percentage on the decimal.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Cost estimator

Species presets auto-fill board-foot prices, or enter your local quote. Price by BF, by piece, or by linear foot โ€” the cost panel totals the real amount of wood you'll carry home.

โš™๏ธWorkflow & output tools

The unglamorous features that decide whether an estimate survives contact with a real jobsite.

Estimates get used in lumber yard aisles, basement workshop floors, and pickup truck beds โ€” not ideal lighting with a spreadsheet open. So the calculator keeps both unit systems live at once: switching Imperial to Metric converts every input and output in sync, including nominal-to-actual dimension conversions (metric mode uses millimeters and meters, with board-foot equivalents in cubic meters at the price-per-volume rate).

Results can be saved to your browser's local storage for project files, reset in one click, or encoded into the page URL. A share link carries your exact inputs โ€” board size, species, quantity, length, waste, pricing โ€” so the same numbers reopen on any device, and nobody re-types a board-foot formula from memory. Saved results never leave your browser and you clear them with one click.

The calculator also reports every intermediate value: gross board feet, net board feet after waste, number of whole boards, total lineal feet, total cubic feet, and the cost breakdown. This transparency is deliberate โ€” an estimate you can audit beats a number you have to trust.

๐Ÿ”

US & metric in sync

One switch converts every input and output between inches/feet and mm/m, with nominal-to-actual conversions and species pricing adjusted for both systems.

๐Ÿ’พ

Save, reset & print

Saved results live in your browser's local storage only โ€” nothing uploads, nothing syncs, and clearing them takes one click. Print a clean copy for the job folder.

Shareable result links

Every calculation encodes into the page URL. Text it to a partner or hand it to the lumber yard staff โ€” the link reopens with your exact inputs loaded.

Four modes, side by side

All four modes feed the same engine but answer different questions. Pick by what you actually need to know โ€” board feet, stud counts, whole boards for trim, or coverage.

Same board count, four very different budgets

Why species selection matters more than any other input: ten boards at the same size cost $186 in SPF, $336 in Douglas Fir, $928 in Cedar, or $630 in Red Oak. The gap between budget softwood and premium hardwood is a factor of 3โ€“5 on identical board counts.

Where the toolchain earns its keep

Six situations where guessing wrong costs real money โ€” and where the board-foot formulas and framing math pay for themselves the first time you use them.

A finished deck โ€” the endpoint of a correctly estimated lumber project

๐Ÿ Framing a new bedroom addition

Wall length ร— 2 for top and bottom plates, stud count at 16-inch OC, king/jack studs for the door โ€” the Framing mode gives you a complete wall takeoff in about 30 seconds.

๐ŸชšBuilding a red oak dining table

Hardwood needs actual dimensions and grain-matching waste. Board Feet mode with actual size toggle and 20% waste gives you the real cost before you lay out the tabletop.

๐Ÿ—๏ธInstalling cedar siding on a gable wall

Coverage mode with your 1ร—6 cedar's 5.5-inch exposed face plus 15% gable waste โ€” converts 200 sq ft of wall into 436 lineal feet of siding boards.

โœจRe-trimming a whole house

Baseboard, casing and crown each get their own Trim mode entry โ€” linear run รท stock length plus miter waste โ€” so you buy the right board lengths for every room.

๐ŸขRental property flip

Multiple walls, multiple stock lengths, same species โ€” Board Feet mode runs every board size and totals the entire project in one takeoff. Contractor-ready before you leave the truck.

๐ŸšชDeck material list

Deck board quantity and length in Board Feet mode, joist framing in Framing mode, decking coverage in Coverage mode โ€” three tabs, one comprehensive material list.

How a run works, start to checkout

The toolchain is designed as one pass, not a quiz. Five steps, about two minutes.

  1. 1

    Pick your mode

Four tabs cover the most common lumber questions. Board Feet for material lists, Framing for stud and plate counts, Board/Trim for whole-board runs, Coverage for area-to-lineal-foot conversions.

  2. 2

    Enter dimensions

Pick a preset size or type custom thickness and width. Choose nominal or actual dimensions depending on how your supplier quotes โ€” nominal for softwood framing, actual for hardwood.

  3. 3

    Set quantity and length

For Board Feet: how many boards and what stock length. For Framing: wall length and opening details. For Coverage: area and exposed face width.

  4. 4

    Pick species and waste

Species presets auto-fill board-foot pricing โ€” override with your local quote. Waste preset: 10% standard framing, 15% diagonal, 20% hardwood grain matching.

Tool questions, answered

Are all four modes really one calculator?+

Yes โ€” every mode lives inside the flagship calculator on the homepage, sharing species pricing, waste factors, and the same whole-board rounding logic. The modes answer different questions but use the same engine.

Do I need to fill in every input?+

No. A board size and quantity alone produce a working board-foot estimate. Each input you add โ€” length, species, waste, pricing โ€” sharpens the result and the purchase plan it produces.

Should I use nominal or actual dimensions?+

Nominal for softwood framing lumber (2ร—4, 2ร—6, 2ร—12 โ€” priced under PS 20-25), actual for hardwood (dressed sizes โ€” your supplier quotes the real board). The toggle switches the basis across all calculations.

Why doesn't the calculator account for defects in lumber?+

Because you can't. Published waste factors already include a small defect allowance, but heavy defect grading (FAS hardwood, construction-grade SPF) varies by species and mill. Use a higher waste factor if your source warns about defects.

Can I trust the species reference prices?+

They are national averages sourced from regional lumber reports โ€” starting points, not final numbers. Always replace them with your local yard's actual quote, since regional variation can shift pricing by 15% or more.

Does the calculator account for header or beam spans?+

For Framing mode: headers are counted as part of opening takeoff, but their size is user-defined. For load-bearing sizing and span verification, use the planned Deck joist & span calculator, which references NDS tables.
